Are you wanting to spend more time working on your health and wellness? Implementing a workout routine can reduce your risk of disease, improve balance and coordination, promote weight loss, and even promote healthier sleeping habits. It can be daunting to find the right exercise regimen. You can begin a fitness program in five easy steps.
#1 Assess your fitness level.
When you’re first starting to get active, record baseline fitness scores so you can easily measure your progress. What exactly do you need to assess? The Mayo Clinic advises taking note of our muscular fitness, flexibility, and body composition. This can be accomplished by recording the length of time it takes you to walk 1 mile and your pulse rate before and after completing the mile. See how many pushups you can complete consecutively. Also, record your waist circumference and BMI.
#2 Design an exercise routine.
Clearly note what your goals are. This will be the guiding factor for building your routine. You will want to start slow and gradually progress from moderate to more vigorous aerobic activity. Be sure to add variety to your workout routine. Once you’ve made your routine, stick to it. Add a time for your workout to your schedule like you would any other appointment.
#3 Get started.
Once you start exercising, begin by stretching and warming up to prevent injuries. Until you’ve built up strength, you may need to break up your exercise into shorter sessions. Be sure to listen to your body. If you’re feeling pain, have shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea, take a break from your workout. You may be pushing yourself too hard.
#4 Monitor your progress.
After your first six weeks of consistently working out, retake your personal fitness assessment. Use this information to make necessary adjustments to your fitness routine for a more efficient exercise experience.
